What's new in ExpertPractice

Case Activity Feed

Every case now has a running timeline — time entries, invoices, payments, and documents log themselves automatically, right alongside your own notes. No more piecing together what happened on a case from five different tabs.

Start/Stop Timer

Start a timer right from the Dashboard and it follows you to every page. Hit Stop and it opens a pre-filled time entry ready to save — no more guessing how long that call actually ran.

Case Types

Tag every case with a type that matches how you actually categorize your work, then filter your case list by it. Manage your list of types — including renaming one everywhere it's used — from My Practice.

The problem

You bill $450/hour. You shouldn't spend 3 hours a month on invoicing.

  • Time entries in Toggl. Case notes in Word. Invoices in Excel. Nothing connects.
  • Manually re-typing time entries into an invoice, hoping the math is right.
  • Different rates for file review, deposition, and trial — tracked by hand.

The solution

One tool built for how expert witnesses actually work

  • Cases, time entries, documents, expenses, and invoices in one place. No more juggling tools.
  • Invoices generate straight from your logged time — no re-typing, no math errors.
  • Multi-rate time tracking — file review at $250, deposition at $300. Auto-filled.

Document Storage

FRCP compliance and challenge tracking

Expert witnesses face unique legal obligations. ExpertPractice now handles two of the most consequential — automatically.

Rule 26 Testimony Disclosure

FRCP 26(a)(2)(B) requires a list of all cases where you testified in the preceding four years. ExpertPractice auto-populates this from your time logs and exports a court-ready PDF in one click.

Daubert & Challenge Tracking

Track every Daubert, Frye, and motion in limine challenge to your testimony. Your admissibility record — favorable rate, outcomes, and case history — is one click away when attorneys ask about your credibility.

More than just time and billing

Tools built for the full expert witness workflow — from engagement to payment.

Built-in Product Guide

Built-in guide that helps you navigate the app and get the most from every feature. Always available, never auto-navigates — you stay in control.

Expense Tracking

Track travel, copying, postage, and other case expenses. Include them on invoices automatically.

Practice Dashboard

See your active cases, hours logged this month, and outstanding invoices at a glance. Quick-add time entries without leaving the dashboard.

Smart Data Import

Upload your existing spreadsheet — we map your columns and migrate your data automatically. Or download a cleaned-up version to verify first.

Your Data, Always

Export everything anytime — including a one-click tax year summary for your accountant with a separate redacted version that omits attorney names. No lock-in, no contracts.

AR Aging Report

See every outstanding invoice bucketed by how overdue it is — Current, 1–30, 31–60, 61–90, and 90+ days. Know at a glance who owes what and for how long.

Attorney Contact Book

Save attorney details once — name, firm, email, phone. Auto-fill them on any new case. Works for both retaining and opposing counsel.

Retainer & Flat-Fee Billing

Bill monthly retainers or fixed project fees alongside hourly entries — or on their own. Finally works for experts on retainer arrangements.

Custom Activity Types

Add your own activity types on top of the 12 built-ins — right from the time entry form. Your most-used types float to the top of the picker automatically.

Recurring & Multi-Day Entries

Log one entry and apply it to several dates at once — pick specific days or set a recurring pattern like weekdays only or every N days.

Smarter Default Rates

Set a rate to $0 to hide an activity type you don't bill for. Case-specific rate overrides now apply consistently everywhere you log time.

How it works

From case setup to paid invoice in three steps.

1

Set up your case

Add the attorney, court, case number, and your rates for each activity type. Takes 2 minutes.

2

Log your time

Select the activity type, enter hours, add a description. Rate auto-fills from your case setup. 10 seconds per entry.

3

Generate your invoice

Select unbilled entries, hit generate. A professional PDF with timestamped audit trail, rate breakdowns, and payment terms. Done.

Built for how you actually work

Not a generic time tracker with an invoice button. Every feature exists because expert witnesses need it.

12 activity types, different rates each

File Review at $350. Deposition Testimony at $500. Trial at $650. Per-case rate structures that auto-fill when you log time. No more calculating in your head.

Every entry timestamped and defensible

When opposing counsel challenges your fees, your invoice shows exactly what you did, when you did it, and at what agreed-upon rate. That's the audit trail that backs you up.

Replace Toggl + Excel + Word

Stop copying time entries from one tool, calculating totals in another, and formatting invoices in a third. One tool handles the entire workflow from case to payment.

Simple pricing

Less than 6 minutes of your billable time per month.

Most experts save 2–3 hours a month on invoicing alone.

ExpertPractice costs less than a single billable hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is my case data secure and confidential?

Yes. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest in a SOC 2-compliant database. We never sell your data or share it for marketing. You can delete everything anytime from Settings.

Can opposing counsel discover my ExpertPractice data under Rule 26?

ExpertPractice doesn't change what is or isn't discoverable — that depends on the type of material and your jurisdiction's rules, not which software holds it. Time entries and invoices are generally treated differently than expert reports, correspondence, or case notes, which can bear on your opinions and are often discoverable regardless of where you store them. Talk to your retaining attorney about what to store and how.

I already use Toggl and Excel. Why switch?

Toggl doesn't understand multi-rate billing by activity type. Excel invoices have no audit trail. ExpertPractice connects your cases, time entries, expenses, and invoices so every dollar is defensible. Most experts save 2-3 hours per month on invoicing alone.

What if I only have a few active cases?

ExpertPractice is valuable even with 2-3 cases. You still save 2-3 hours a month on invoicing, and every invoice comes with a built-in audit trail if a fee ever gets questioned. At $49/mo — less than 6 minutes of your billable time — it pays for itself fast.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — 14 days with full access to all features. No credit card required to start. If it's not for you, just don't subscribe.

Can I import my existing cases?

Yes. Upload a CSV or Excel file and our importer will map your columns automatically. You can also download a cleaned-up version to verify before importing.

What does the product guide do?

The built-in Product Guide helps you navigate ExpertPractice and get the most from every feature. It's always available via the sparkle button — ask it how to create a case, generate an invoice, or import your data.
