Changelog
Everything we've shipped in ExpertPractice.
Calendar
Track every deposition, court date, meeting, and deadline in one place — a real month view, not a list. Link an event to a case and it shows up right on that case's timeline. Set up recurring meetings (with the ability to edit or cancel just one occurrence), and invoice due dates and overdues appear on the grid automatically so you're never caught off guard. Import your existing calendar via .ics, or export yours to take with you.
Check out your CalendarPractice Intelligence Gets Its Own Page
Your utilization, revenue trends, and collection rates moved out of a dashboard card into a dedicated Practice Intelligence page — the dashboard still shows a quick summary with a link straight through to the full report.
View Practice IntelligenceCase Activity Feed
Every case detail page now has a running timeline — time entries, invoices, payments, expenses, and documents log themselves automatically, and you can drop your own notes right alongside them, tagged as General, Rate Change, Billing, or Communication. No more piecing together what happened on a case from five different tabs.
Start/Stop Timer
Start a timer right from the Dashboard and it follows you to every page — a running clock stays visible until you hit Stop, which opens a pre-filled time entry ready to save. No more guessing how long that call actually ran.
Case Types
Tag every case with a type that actually matches how you categorize your work — Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, whatever fits your practice. Filter your case list by type and see it right on the case detail page. Manage your list of types, including renaming one everywhere it's used, from My Practice.
Engagement Letter, Rebuilt
Generating an engagement letter is now a real guided flow instead of a single modal — review auto-filled details, customize your terms, then edit and preview the PDF, with autosave along the way so you never lose your place. Find it on any case's Engagement Letter tab.
Meet My Practice
Your firm profile, invoicing defaults, rates, and expense types have moved out of Settings into a new dedicated My Practice area, with its own spot in the sidebar. Settings now just handles your data, tax, and appearance preferences.
Dashboard Flags Overdue Invoices
Your Awaiting Payment stat card turns red and tells you exactly how many invoices are overdue the moment one is — no more digging into AR Aging just to find out you're behind.
Help Center Is Now Searchable
Find the article you need by typing instead of scrolling — the Help Center is now categorized and searchable across every article.
Browse the Help CenterLog Time in a Modal, Not a New Page
Log Time now opens right where you are — Dashboard, Cases, or Time Log — instead of sending you to a separate page and losing your spot. Save and keep going, or review a clean summary of exactly what you're about to record before you commit. Editing an existing entry works the same way now.
Contacts, Redesigned
Contacts is now a searchable card grid instead of a plain list — find any attorney, insurer, or other case contact in a couple keystrokes, no matter how many you've built up. Each card shows what you actually check at a glance: firm, role, and how to reach them.
Help Center Nearly Doubled
9 new articles since July, closing gaps across import, invoicing, and contacts. Help Center links now show up right next to the feature they explain, instead of living only in one central hub — and a "Was this helpful?" button on every article tells us where we're still missing the mark.
Browse the Help CenterSmarter Import Wizard
Importing from a spreadsheet now matches rows to your existing cases instead of assuming everything is new, and confirms ambiguous dates before committing — fewer duplicate cases and fewer entries to clean up after a big import.
Do More From the Dashboard
New quick-action buttons for logging time and creating a case sit right at the top of your Dashboard, and every stat card now shows exactly where clicking it takes you. Case cards also picked up a View Time button that jumps straight to that case's time log.
Faster Everywhere
Dashboard, Time Log, and Invoices all load with fewer database round trips — most noticeable the first time you open the app each day.
Video Guides on YouTube
Four short video guides are live — Getting Started, Setting Up Your Practice, How to Create a Case, and Time Tracking — each under a minute and showing the real product, not a slide deck. More are on the way covering invoicing, contacts, documents, and your public expert profile.
Watch on YouTubeMultiple Attorneys Per Case
Add as many retaining attorneys as a case actually has — same firm or different firms. Everywhere attorney info shows up (invoices, engagement letters, Rule 26 testimony disclosures, and your data export) now groups and labels each attorney by their own firm correctly, instead of only showing one. Find it in the case form under Retaining Attorney(s): "Add another attorney."
Quick-Edit a Time Entry
Click the pencil icon on any time entry to edit it right there in a modal — no more losing your place on the Time Log page.
Faster Time Log and Invoices
Both pages now load in pages instead of all at once, with the underlying queries sped up too — most noticeable once you've logged a few thousand entries.
Void an Invoice Without Losing the Paper Trail
A voided invoice still keeps its original PDF one click away — including each payer's own copy on a split invoice. And if a payer has already paid their share, voiding is blocked with a clear explanation instead of silently orphaning their payment.
How voiding worksInstall ExpertPractice on Your Phone
Add ExpertPractice to your home screen like a native app, right from the browser prompt. Also: layout fixes across time entry, invoices, and cases so nothing overflows or gets cut off on a phone screen.
Log Time Now, Fill In Hours Later
Save a time entry with the Hours field blank — it's flagged "Needs hours" in your Time Log until you come back and fill it in. Useful for logging a deposition or filing the moment it happens, before you know the exact hours. Flat-fee entries no longer require a fabricated hours value either.
Help Center
New home for step-by-step how-tos — generating your first invoice, splitting one between payers, voiding and correcting mistakes, retainers vs. advances, and more. 6 articles and growing.
Browse the Help CenterSplit an Invoice Across Multiple Payers
Custody cases, insurer-shared costs, co-counsel splits — some invoices have more than one payer from the start. Create a split invoice and each payer gets their own record, PDF, payment history, and reminder schedule, with the total allocated to the cent, including a visible rounding-adjustment line when a percentage split doesn't divide evenly. Find it in the invoice builder: toggle "Split this invoice among multiple payers."
Bill a Non-Split Invoice to the Right Payer
Split invoicing configures who a case's payers are, but not every invoice on that case needs to be split among them. Leave split billing off and a "Bill to" dropdown lets you send the whole invoice to whichever configured payer it actually belongs to — not just the case attorney by default. Find it in the invoice builder, right below the split toggle.
Contacts for Insurance, Parties, and More
Not every contact on a case is an attorney. Retaining and opposing counsel, and any split-invoice payer, can now be typed as Attorney, Insurance, Party, or Other — each with the right label (Firm, Company, or Organization) and full contact details throughout. Find it wherever you add a contact: the case form, split payers, or Contacts.
Rearrange Cases Your Way
Drag and drop any case on the Cases page into the order that actually matches how you work — it overrides the default status grouping and holds up whether you have a dozen cases or a few thousand. Works within a status filter or search, and on mobile too.
Tax Year Summary, Rebuilt
Your Tax Year Summary now reports what you actually collected during the year — including retainers — instead of what you billed, matching how the IRS taxes cash-basis filers. It's also a real formatted PDF now, not just a CSV; the raw CSV data is still available as a secondary download. Find it in Settings → Tax Year Summary.
Retainers & Case Credit
Record a payment against a case — before you've even created an invoice — and choose whether it's a Retainer (a fee to secure your commitment, never applied to any invoice) or an Advance Payment (drawable credit you can apply toward invoices as you generate them). Both show up in your case's payment history and on your reconciliation reports, clearly labeled. Find it on the case detail page, or right when creating a new case.
Bill a Flat Amount on Any Time Entry
Not every task fits hours × rate. Toggle "Bill a flat amount instead of hours × rate" when logging time to invoice a flat deposition fee, travel day, or project rate — your hours are still recorded for your own records, they just won't drive the invoice amount for that entry.
Invoice Follow-Up Reminders
Never lose track of a slow-paying invoice. Turn on a reminder for any sent invoice and choose how often you want a nudge — your call on the interval. Find it right on the invoice detail page.
Custom Activity Types
Create your own activity types on top of the 12 built-ins, right from the time entry form. Your 5 most-used types (built-in or custom) float to the top of the picker automatically. Manage custom types — rename or delete — from Settings → Default Rates.
Recurring & Multi-Day Time Entries
Log one entry and apply it to several dates at once. Pick specific days on a calendar, or set a recurring pattern — weekdays only, specific days of the week, or every N days. Auto-created entries are marked with a small badge in your time log so you can always tell what was entered by hand. Find it under Time → Log Time → Repeat this entry.
Smarter Default Rates
Set a rate to $0 to hide an activity type you don't bill for — it'll disappear from your time entry picker until you need it again. Case-specific rate overrides now apply consistently everywhere, including the time entry picker.
Import Wizard Improvements
Smarter rate detection when your spreadsheet has a total amount instead of an hourly rate, support for workbooks organized one sheet per case, and editable activity type mappings so you can fix a misread column without starting over.
Public Expert Profile & Directory
Optionally publish a professional expert profile and get discovered by attorneys searching by specialty and location. Off by default — turn it on anytime under Settings → Public Profile. When an attorney submits a contact form, it lands in your Inquiries inbox and you receive an email notification. Inquiries are yours alone; nothing is shared with other experts.
Rule 26 Testimony Disclosure List
Generate your FRCP 26(a)(2)(B) testimony disclosure in one click. We build the list automatically from your time logs — any case where you logged Deposition Testimony or Trial Testimony appears as a suggested event. Filter to the required 4-year window, review, and export a court-ready PDF. Find it under Testimony.
Daubert & Challenge Tracking
Track every challenge to your expert testimony — Daubert, Frye, motions in limine — and record the outcome. See your admissibility record at a glance: admitted in X of Y resolved challenges. Your record is one of your strongest marketing assets; now it's one place. Find it under Challenges.
Case-specific rates are now easier to find
Each case has its own billing rates, and we’ve made that clearer throughout the app. When creating a case, you’ll see your rates listed up front with a link to customize them for that case. The case detail page now shows a “Billing Rates for This Case” card with a direct edit button. And when you log time, the rate field confirms it was auto-filled from the case — so you always know exactly what rate is being used.
Attorney Contact Book
Save attorney details once, auto-fill them every time you create a case — for both retaining and opposing counsel. Add attorneys directly from the case form without navigating away.
AR Aging Report
See all outstanding invoices bucketed by days past due — Current, 1–30, 31–60, 61–90, and 90+. Know exactly where your slow-pay problem is and which invoices need follow-up. Find it under Invoices → AR Aging.
Tax Year Summary Export
One-click export of all time entries, invoices, and expenses for a calendar year. Two formats: full detail for your records, or a redacted version for your accountant that omits attorney names and work descriptions.
Retainer & Flat-Fee Billing
Invoice for monthly retainers, project fees, or any fixed amount — alongside hourly entries or on their own. Add flat fees in the invoice builder before generating.
AI Assistant upgraded
The built-in Product Guide now runs on Claude Haiku 4.5, with a Gemini fallback. Faster, more accurate answers to app navigation questions.
You control your data
Your cases, time entries, and invoices belong to you. You can export or delete everything from Settings at any time. We never sell your data or use it to train AI. Services we use are disclosed in our Privacy Policy.
Practice Intelligence — built from your feedback
You asked, we built it. Your dashboard now includes utilization and collection rates, practice averages by time period, monthly trends, and a breakdown of how you spend your time by activity type. Use it to quote new engagements with confidence.
Payment tracking
Record partial and full payments against your invoices. Track exactly what's been paid, what's outstanding, and how long attorneys take to pay on average.
Guided engagement letter
3-step flow: review auto-filled details, customize terms (retainer, cancellation policy, scope), then preview and download. No more hunting for brackets.
Invoice cover letter
Download your invoice with an auto-generated cover letter as page 1. Or upload your own firm letterhead — we merge it into a single PDF.
Site Inspection activity type
Now a standard activity alongside File Review, Deposition Testimony, and others. No more mapping to "Other" for field work.
Faster time logging
After saving a time entry, "Log another" keeps your case selected and resets the form. No more re-selecting the same case.
Suggested rates in onboarding
One click fills all rates based on your specialty. Adjust any rate individually after.
Smarter CSV import
The import review now shows mapped activity names instead of your raw data. "Depo Prep" displays as "Deposition Preparation" so you know exactly what will be imported.
Case list at a glance
Each case now shows total hours, dollar amount, and unbilled entry count directly on the case list.
Clearer dashboard stats
"Unbilled" shows time not yet invoiced. "Awaiting Payment" shows invoiced but unpaid. No more guessing what "Outstanding" means.
Side-by-side import comparison
Import your existing billing data and see your original spreadsheet next to how ExpertPractice reads it. Export back in your original format anytime.
Invoice confirmation
Review and confirm that all rates, hours, and calculations are accurate before generating. Every invoice is verified.
CSV & Excel import wizard
Upload any CSV or Excel file. We detect columns, map activity types, and handle messy data automatically.
Engagement letter generator
Generate a professional engagement letter from your case details. Pre-filled with your rates, terms, and attorney info.
Email sequences
Welcome emails and trial reminders keep you informed about your account status automatically.
